What Causes Cloudy Water?

You may notice that your water is only cloudy for a few moments when you first fill up a glass, then the cloudiness seemingly disappears. This can be caused by your water being under pressure within the pipes, or it can be caused by air bubbles quickly rising to the surface of your glass. Once the air bubbles reach the top of the water, they evaporate into the surrounding air, thus clearing the water you’ve poured. If this has ever happened to you at home, there is likely nothing wrong with your water at all, as these air bubbles are perfectly safe to drink. This cloudy water commonly occurs when it’s cold outside, as the solubility of air in water increases as water pressure increases and/or water temperature decreases. Cold water holds more air than warm water, and as water travels from your city’s reservoir to your glass, that water is gradually warming up.

Worried About What’s in Your Water?

Although some instances of cloudy water can be perfectly safe to drink, not all cloudy water issues are related to air pressure. Contaminates in the pipes can also cause cloudy water.

AquaKnow has a wide variety of water testing kits available. For peace of mind in knowing that your family is safe, order our best-selling City Check Standard kit to test your tap water.

The City Check Standard is a best seller for a reason. This water testing kit is for city/municipal water sources and will test for a wide variety of potential contaminants. This kit is a more comprehensive testing package, covering more than just the usual basics, which include: lead, copper, chlorine, chloramines, and disinfection by-products. These by-products include bromate, trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, and chlorite. The City Check Standard looks for a complete list of metals, minerals, inorganic compounds and a full list of volatile organic compounds. Volatile organic compounds are made up of petroleum-based products and industrial solvents. If you have something in particular that you’d also like to test for, you can add more tests to any of the kits you find online, completing your full water analysis.
