Outside of air, water is the one thing we can’t live without for very long. Water delivery systems have been a cornerstone of cities and towns for centuries, and these systems have advanced quite a long way. Thanks to an understanding of diseases, increasingly better regulations, infrastructure, and advancing technology, many problems with waterborne contaminants and pathogens have become history.
But anything can still happen. The most closely-monitored municipal water supply can still be breached through catastrophic floods or earthquakes compromising the infrastructure, and rural personal supplies like wells are more vulnerable still, often falling prey to mudslides or industry and farm runoff after a heavy rainfall.
Bad Water Runs Clear, Too
A contaminated water supply isn’t as easy as being able to see caked mud or dirt floating around and making the water murky. Contaminants that permeate the water in concentrations of only a few parts per million can often be undetectable to sight and taste, but can still cause very severe health effects, or death.
This is why water testing is important. Here are three ways water testing can help prevent problems that could sicken or kill you.
#1: Isolate for Problems in Your Water System
This mostly applies to people who are drawing well water for private supply. A well supply and filtration system contains many components, and the compromise of even one of these components could mean failure to filter out common contaminants. This means that even if there hasn’t been a runoff event, your water could still be compromised.
According to the United Nations, more than 80 percent of the wastewater in industrialized nations goes back into the environment without any treatment, and that number shoots up in poorer or less advanced nations with questionable government regulation.
#2: Detecting Odorless, Colorless, and Tasteless Deadly Water Contaminants
Since any water supply can become tainted for a number of reasons, and much of what contaminates these systems can cause severe illness or death, regular water testing goes a long way toward giving you peace of mind.
Any areas affected by catastrophes, like sudden heavy rainfalls or seismic occurrences, should be regularly tested. In rural areas, runoff from farms often carries nitrates, which babies and young children are particularly prone to since it affects the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.
Perhaps the worst contaminants undetectable to the senses are lead and bacteria. Lead contamination affects older cities with decaying infrastructure that still contains lead piping to carry water. Lead exposure can cause nosebleeds, headaches, seizures, and a number of developmental problems in children. Bacteria like E. coli can cause gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and bloody stool.
#3: To Detect Unsafe Levels of Common Additives
As well-guarded as our municipal supplies are, they are not infallible. Much of what prevents contamination in these systems are low concentrations of chemical additives, which can mostly be harmless. Until they aren’t.
Recent studies on the application of chlorine in municipal supplies (for keeping water sterile) and fluorine (for promoting healthy bone and teeth structure) have cast scrutiny upon some of the ways these chemicals are applied. In concentrations too high, they can cause severe illnesses or poisoning, and can react with decaying organic matter to create disinfection by-products (DBPs).
